How I Ended Up At UChicago’s Booth School of Business:

When I left undergrad at the University of Notre Dame and headed back home to Florida to a banking job, something within me had changed. Prior to undergrad, I had spent most of my life in a mid-size city and sought big city life. Moreover, while interning in banking during my college years, I encountered a few C-Level executives who opened up a new world for me and propelled my thinking along the management track. They convinced me that to climb the corporate ranks and to potentially reach the C-Suite, that I would need to obtain an MBA from a top school.

I knew also that to be personally happy that I would need to pursue my MBA in or proximate to a larger city. A larger market would offer ample opportunity for heightened exposure to corporate operations and business opportunities, as well as more options for fun and entertainment. It helped that I had friends already living in Chicago and many Notre Dame Alumni also settled in Chicago.

At the end of the day, I was offered a full scholarship to another top MBA program, but declined it when I received my acceptance to the Booth School. From my first day on campus in Hyde Park, I knew that I had made the right choice for me. Booth’s program clicked. My peers clicked. Also, since I grew up next to the ocean in Florida, living a few blocks from Lake Michigan really clicked. Moreover, the shopping and entertainment offerings in Chicago, from the Bulls and Bears to the Blues and Jazz, rounded-out the exposure that I had been searching for in a big-city graduate school environment. The UChicago fit was "practically perfect in every way".

Although turning down a very good MBA scholarship meant that I had to pay for my UChicago MBA education, I harbor few regrets. Even today, nearly 20 years post-graduation, the admiration and respect that I hold for the University of Chicago has not diminished. To the contrary, it has only grown stronger with time.

Taking Advantage of Networking:

While at the Booth School, one of my peers advised me to get to know as many of our classmates as possible, and to get the best possible grades. I did okay with grades, More...
